Ukraine: Children must wear bulletproof vests for fear of attack

A NGO of Ukraine andis producing bulletproof vests and protective helmets for kids, since official figures show that more than 1,200 have been victims of the Russian invasion.

Mariana Chugunovaan internally displaced person from Kharkiv, tried a protective suit on his daughter in the past October 28. She said it would have been easier for her family evacuate Kharkiv if they had had protection for the child.

“If, God forbid, we have to evacuate now, we would have a bulletproof vest and a helmet and I would not worry about my son,”

Chugunova said.

A total of 430 children have died and others 823 have been injured since Russia invaded on February 24, according to the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine.

Anton Fedchenko, head of communications of the NGO Lviv Defense Cluster, who designed the kits, said such protective gear had never been produced before.

“There was no need… Unfortunately, our enemy doesn’t care who gets shot at,”

Fedchenko added.

Maksym Plyokhov, chairman of the board of the NGO, said the main purpose of the jackets was to help children safely evacuate war zones.

“Today we understand that there is a need for this (bulletproof vests for children), considering the number of children killed,”

He said that the jackets offered protection to kids against bullets, shrapnel, and flying glass and debris.
