A group of forensic specialists managed to recreate with high detail and realism the face of the pregnant Egyptian mummy, known as “the mysterious lady”which is two thousand years old.
through the Warsaw Mummy Project, Two forensic specialists individually produced a couple of facial reconstructions of the pregnant mummy. Using 2D and 3D techniques (CT scans and x-rays), the researchers generated the two approximations of what this ancient Egyptian woman may have looked like.
Both reconstructions show a woman in her 20s, who was pregnant, and who had dark skin and brown eyes.
In the images, the face of the mummy can be seen looking straight ahead, providing a realistic image of it. However, the creators warned that the recreations “cannot be considered an exact portrait.”
“Our bones, and the skull in particular, give a lot of information about an individual’s face. Although it cannot be considered an exact portrait, the skull, like many anatomical parts, is unique and shows a set of shapes and proportions that will partially appear in the final face” says Chantal Milani, an Italian forensic anthropologist and member of the project.
For his part, Wojciech Ejsmond, co-director of the Warsaw Mummy Project, said that “modern techniques allow us to perform a virtual autopsy of the mummy. We can look under the bandages and inside her body. For the first time, her face will be revealed to the general public and everyone will be able to look at her face.”
The identity of the mummy “the mysterious lady” was not the only thing discovered by the experts, since according to what they revealed, it is very likely that in lifeThe woman suffered from cancer.
These facial reconstructions they can be seen at an exhibition opened at the Silesian Museum in Katowice on November 3, 2022.
