The president of the Spanish Society of Anti-Aging and Longevity Medicine (SEMAL), plastic surgeon José Serres, announced this Thursday that the US Drug Agency, the FDA, has approved the use of Daxxify*, a state-of-the-art botulinum toxin that “promises a more natural result” and extends its effect over six months.

As he explained, the longer duration of this type of botulinum toxin, which will be applied soon in Spain, “will revolutionize the most demanded aesthetic treatment, since patients would only have to go to clinics twice a year, compared to the current four” .

This is one of the novelties that has been presented at the last congress of the Semal and that will be debated at the congress of the Spanish Society of Facial Plastic Surgery from November 24 to 26 in Córdoba, where Dr. Serres will present the latest advances in combined techniques in facial rejuvenation, hyaluronic acid filler and botox.

Regarding the already existing toxins, the president of the Semal recalls that their application has been reviewed, since many of the indications that were given, such as relative rest after passing through the clinic for their administration, “do not make sense as can be deduced from the latest studies.

The new botulinum toxin authorized in Spain for aesthetic use Letybo* has also been presented, which will offer more diversity among neuromodulators. La Semal has also discussed antidotes that shorten the effect of botulinum toxin. And although it makes it clear that there is no antidote as such, it has been anticipated that in the case of some small complication in patients, some substances can be used that allow working to shorten the duration of the effect.

As they have explained, Botox is still the best treatment to eliminate wrinkles, but at a clinical level it also has many applications, such as hyperhidrosis, whether axillary, plantar and palmar, and bruxism, grinding of the teeth, which until the appearance of toxins had poor treatment.

People who strongly clench their teeth, mainly when sleeping, are offered an outstanding solution, since most of the time they do it unconsciously, but this produces consequences, such as dental hypersensitivity, wear of the pieces, cervical tension , headaches, ear and jaw pain.

“Botox also gives very good results in migraines and in blepharospasm or involuntary blinking of the eyelids, and even in the seizing of limbs due to paralysis and muscle contractures”, they have stressed. These last indications are treated in public hospitals or in private clinics by medical specialists in each discipline.

Experts have warned of the proliferation of misleading offers of botulinum toxin and hyaluronic acid fillers. “Eliminating wrinkles caused by aging has also led to deceptive practices flourishing carried out by unqualified people and in unauthorized centers, both in Spain and throughout Europe,” they said.

The French National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products, ANSM, in its French acronym, has warned that so far this year it has received some forty reports of adverse reactions after injections of hyaluronic acid performed by unauthorized persons.

“The current regulations establish that the botulinum toxin and all the filler substances should only be administered by doctors with the appropriate qualifications and with experience in the treatment”, said the president of the Semal, after recalling that the application has to be carried out carried out in duly authorized health centers.

Doctors, in fact, must have a pharmacy deposit and a special license issued by the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality. “Beauty centers, gyms or hairdressers do not have this type of permit. Aesthetic Medicine cannot be carried out outside a health center”, concluded Dr. Serres.
