(CNN Spanish) — Pennsylvania is one of the six key states in these midterm elections, where what happens can impact issues such as abortion rights, economic policy, education and the climate crisis, not only within its borders, but throughout the country. Check out the results of the gubernatorial and congressional race here.
Josh Shapiro wins the governorship
Democratic state attorney general Josh Shapiro will be Pennsylvania’s next governor, CNN projects, defeating far-right Republican state legislator Doug Mastriano.
Shapiro’s rise means Democrats will retain control of the highest seat in the state, providing a powerful check on the GOP-held state legislature as Gov. Tom Wolf leaves office due to term limits. Shapiro is also now poised to become one of the top national Democratic figures shortlisted for the party’s upcoming open presidential primary.
The gubernatorial race pitted Democrat Josh Shapiro against Republican Doug Mastriano.
Shapiro, the state attorney general, is trying to maintain Democratic control of the governorship in a race that has become more important because the governor appoints the official responsible for elections.
Shapiro’s opponent is Republican state Sen. Doug Mastriano, who was a central figure supporting former President Donald Trump’s efforts to nullify the 2020 election.
The results of the congressional elections
Democrat John Fetterman will win the Pennsylvania Senate race, CNN projects, defeating Republican Mehmet Oz and helping Democrats win the seat following Republican Sen. Pat Toomey’s retirement.
Democratic Rep. Matt Cartwright will hold on to his seat in Pennsylvania’s 8th Congressional District, CNN projects, defeating Republican Jim Bognet in a second straight general election.
